Richmond Hill’s central location and its reputation as a bastion for the upwardly mobile has helped make it ground zero for a retail boom in 2007.

Within weeks of each other, Costco, Bed, Bath and Beyond and Home Depot hung an Open for Business shingle outside stores in the town of 162,000.

It’s welcome news for local families, who want to fill their homes with products.

It also represents a boon to town coffers as large-scale businesses create local jobs and generate commercial tax revenue.

Last year, the town issued 495 building permits for $45.7-million of retail/commercial development.

Figures from Richmond Hill’s building department indicate the town will eclipse both categories by the time 2007 draws to a close as more than 550 building permits had been issued by the end of November, with a value of more than $94 million.
